MD Factory converts saved EML emails to Markdown on your Windows PC. The result includes the message body, sender and recipient details, date, and supported inline images. Attachments appear as a list of names; the app does not open or convert them.

Use this when an email explains a project decision, confirms a requirement, or contains instructions you want to keep with your other documents. A Markdown copy is easy to read in a notes app without opening your mailbox.

Save the messages as EML files

Save the messages you need as .eml files. Here are two ways to do that on your PC:

  • In Gmail, open the message on the website, click More (the three dots), then Download message.
  • In Thunderbird, select the message and press Ctrl+S. In the save dialog, choose the Mail (.eml) file type and save it.

Check that the saved file ends in .eml. Changing another extension to .eml does not convert the file.

Put related messages in one folder. For example, collect the emails that discuss a project's requirements and the later message that confirms the final decision. Keep the originals so you can return to the full message later.

Know what the Markdown contains

Part of the emailIn the Markdown result
Message detailsSubject, sender, recipients, Cc, and date when present in the email.
Message bodyThe readable content of the email, including supported formatting and links.
Inline imagesSupported images embedded in the message, saved in a folder beside the Markdown file.
AttachmentsA list of attachment names. Their contents are not included.

Images hosted on a website are not downloaded during conversion. If a message depends on one of those images, refer to the original email when reviewing it.

Convert your saved emails

  1. Add one EML file, several messages, or their folder to MD Factory.
  2. Choose where to save the Markdown results.
  3. Click Convert and review any messages that need attention.
  4. Open the finished Markdown and compare it with the original email.

Each message gets its own Markdown file. MD Factory saves images in a folder beside it. Your EML originals stay unchanged. When you move the Markdown file into your notes, move its image folder with it so the pictures remain available.

If you also need an attached PDF or Word document, save that attachment separately and add it to MD Factory. Our PDF conversion guide explains how to review converted PDFs.

Check the message and its context

Read the sender, date, and subject before using a message as a reference. Then check where the latest reply ends and older quoted messages begin. Repeated signatures and long reply chains can distract from the part you need.

Keep your own summary in a separate note and link it to the converted message. For example, write which requirement changed and which email confirmed the change.

Use emails in notes and AI tasks

For an AI task, provide only the relevant messages and ask for the subject and date alongside each finding. If an answer depends on an attachment, supply that document too. A filename in an attachment list does not tell the tool what the attachment says.

See our document workflow for AI agents for a source index and prompts that ask for references.

MD Factory converts the files locally. Before sharing the results, check for private addresses or confidential text. If the folder syncs to the cloud or you give the files to an AI service, they leave your PC. The MD Factory Privacy Policy explains how the app handles your documents.
