To batch convert documents to Markdown on Windows, open MD Factory, click Add folder, choose where to save the results, and click Convert. The app adds supported files from the folder and its subfolders to a queue.

This is useful for a project archive, a collection of reports, or course materials saved in several formats. Each source document gets its own Markdown file. Your originals stay unchanged.

Document folders and organized paper stacks beside a closed laptop.
A folder of source documents, with a separate result for each one.

Choose the source folder

Start with the documents you actually need. If an archive mixes final copies with old drafts, put the files you want into a separate folder first. That saves you from sorting through duplicate versions afterward.

You can leave useful subfolders in place. MD Factory looks inside them, so there is no need to move every document into one directory. A folder can contain PDFs, Word documents, spreadsheets, slides, ebooks, saved web pages, and emails. The supported formats are listed on the product page.

Choose an output folder outside the source folder. This keeps the converted files easy to find without mixing them with the originals.

Convert the folder

For a large collection, try one representative file before adding the whole folder. A report with headings, a table, and a diagram is a useful first check. See the guides for Word documents and PDF files if those make up most of your archive.

  1. Open MD Factory and click Add folder.
  2. Select the folder containing your documents.
  3. Check the queue. Unsupported files are skipped, and the summary shows how many items were skipped.
  4. Choose your output folder and click Convert.
  5. When processing finishes, click Open output.

Documents are processed one at a time. If one fails, the queue continues with the rest. Open the failed item to read the error, then retry that file when the problem is resolved. You do not need to convert the successful files again.

Find the Markdown files

Inside your output folder, MD Factory creates a folder named after the source folder and keeps its subfolders. Each document has its own folder with Markdown and any exported images. If you added a folder named Research, a Word report could appear like this:

Output/
  Research/
    Reports/
      Annual report/
        Annual report.md
        assets/

Move or copy the whole document folder when adding it to your notes. The Markdown links to the images saved with it, so copying only the text file can leave the images behind.

If a result with the same name already exists, MD Factory adds a number to the new folder, such as Annual report (2). It does not overwrite the previous result.

Check the results

Review any items marked Needs review, then open a few completed documents from different formats. Compare headings, table values, links, and images with the originals. For scanned PDFs, check names and numbers in the recognized text.

Keep the source documents available for reference. If the next step is to use the collection with an AI agent, the document preparation guide explains how to organize the converted material.

Conversion runs on your PC. If your output folder syncs with OneDrive or another cloud service, the results can sync too. The MD Factory privacy policy explains how the app handles your documents.
