To stop Windows 11 offering to turn off banners for apps you ignore, select the … menu on one of those prompts and turn them off, or turn off Notification Suggestions in Settings > System > Notifications. Tips and the welcome screen after updates have separate checkboxes under Additional settings on the same page.

Stop Notification Suggestions

Windows watches whether you interact with an app's notifications. If you do not, it suggests turning off that app's banners. Accepting the suggestion stops only the banners; the notifications still go to the notification center. Microsoft described this in its September 2023 configuration update.

The suggestions themselves can be switched off since the October 2024 preview updates, KB5044380 for Windows 11 versions 22H2 and 23H2 and KB5044384 for 24H2. There are two ways:

  1. On the next suggestion, select the … button and turn the suggestions off.
  2. Or open Settings > System > Notifications and turn off Notification Suggestions in the list of senders.

Microsoft notes that the entry appears in the list only after you have received a suggestion.

Before you answer yes to a suggestion, check which app it is about. Turning off banners for a backup, security or calendar app means its next alert waits in the notification center without a banner.

Turn off tips and the welcome experience

  1. Open Settings > System > Notifications.
  2. Scroll down and expand Additional settings.
  3. Clear Show the Windows welcome experience after updates and when signed in to show what's new and suggested.
  4. Clear Get tips and suggestions when using Windows.

Both checkboxes are named in Microsoft's notifications guide. Some versions show a third one, Suggest ways I can finish setting up my device to get the most out of Windows, as in this Microsoft Q&A answer. Clear it too if you see it.

Turn off suggestions inside Settings

The Settings app shows its own recommendations. Open Settings > Privacy & security > Recommendations & offers and turn off Show me suggested content in the Settings app, as Microsoft's privacy settings article describes. If your PC has no such page, look under Privacy & security > General.

A separate page, Privacy & security > Personalized offers, has Get personalized tips, ads, and recommendations based on my Windows activity. That switch controls whether Microsoft uses your activity to tailor tips and offers. It is a privacy choice and does not by itself hide every tip.

The Start menu has its own recommendation switches under Settings > Personalization > Start. Microsoft's Start menu article says that if you turn off every recommendation provider, that section of Start collapses.

Turn off one app that keeps promoting something

If the unwanted notifications come from a specific app, switch off that app rather than a Windows setting. Open the notification center with Windows + N, select the … button on one of its notifications and choose Turn off all notifications. You can also select the app under Settings > System > Notifications, as Microsoft's notifications guide shows.

If the sender is a browser, the notifications come from a website, not from the browser itself. Block the site as described in cleaning up browser notification spam. If you cannot tell who sent a notification, start with finding the sender of a mystery notification.

Keep the warnings you need

Do not turn off Windows Security notifications while you clean up. Its settings let you hide informational messages, and Microsoft says you will always be notified when there is a problem that needs immediate action. Leave Windows Security switched on in Settings > System > Notifications.

To see which senders really produce the noise before you switch anything off, look at a week of history, as in the seven-day notification audit. Notification Logger records the app, time and text of each Windows notification it captures, and you can filter the log by app.

Frequently asked questions

What are Notification Suggestions in Windows 11?
They are prompts Windows shows when you do not interact with an app's notifications. They offer to turn off that app's banners; its notifications still go to the notification center.
Why is Notification Suggestions missing from my notification settings?
Microsoft says the entry appears in the list of senders only after you receive a suggestion. The switch arrived with the October 2024 preview updates, so a PC without them may not have it.
Does turning off tips stop security warnings?
No. Tips and suggestions are separate from Windows Security, which Microsoft says always notifies you when a problem needs immediate action.
Does accepting a suggestion delete the app's notifications?
No. It stops only the banners. The notifications still collect in the notification center, so open it with Windows + N to read them.

Notification Logger keeps a searchable log of Windows notifications that you can filter by app, so you can see which senders to switch off.
