To save a web page as Markdown from a single file, press Ctrl+S in Edge or Chrome, set Save as type to Webpage, Single File, and add the saved .mhtml file to MD Factory. The app converts it on your PC. The Markdown gets the page's text and links, plus the images stored inside the file.
This guide covers the single-file route. If you prefer the HTML file with a _files folder, see Convert HTML and saved web pages to Markdown.
Save the page as a single file
- Open the page and wait until it has finished loading.
- In Chrome, press Ctrl+S, or open More, then Cast, save, and share, then Save page as. The steps are in Chrome Help. In Edge, press Ctrl+S; the shortcut is listed in Edge keyboard shortcuts.
- In the Save as type list, choose Webpage, Single File.
- Check that the file name ends in
.mhtml, choose a folder, and click Save.
The list has two more entries, Webpage, Complete and Webpage, HTML Only. Both are explained in the HTML guide.
The format is called MHTML. Its files end in .mhtml or .mht; MD Factory reads both. An MHTML file holds the page's HTML and its images in one file, packed the way an email with inline pictures is.
When one file is better than a folder
Webpage, Complete saves an .html file and a folder next to it, named like the page and ending in _files. Webpage, Single File puts everything in one file. The choice is about how you store and move pages.
| Situation | Webpage, Single File | Webpage, Complete |
|---|---|---|
| What lands on your disk | One .mhtml file | An .html file and a _files folder |
| Moving, sending, or syncing a page | Move or attach one file | Move the file and its folder together |
| Collecting many pages in one folder | The folder holds only the pages | Every page adds a folder |
| Editing the saved HTML or reusing a picture from the folder | Everything is packed into one file | The HTML and the pictures are separate files |
Choose Single File when you are collecting pages for reading, research, or an AI task and want each page to be one object. Choose Complete when you need the HTML or the pictures as separate files.
Convert the saved page
- Open MD Factory.
- Add the
.mhtmlfile, several files, or the folder where you keep your saved pages. Dragging them onto the window works too. - Conversion starts right away. Wait for the status on each row.
- Open the finished Markdown file and compare it with the page.
The Markdown file gets the name of the saved page and is saved next to it. The pictures go into a folder beside it:
Saved pages/
Sourdough bread.mhtml
Sourdough bread.md
Sourdough bread_images/
Your .mhtml file is never changed. If you convert it again, MD Factory replaces its own earlier result only if you have not edited it; otherwise it saves a numbered copy such as Sourdough bread (2).md. When you move the note, move its _images folder with it, or the pictures will not show. For many pages at once, see batch conversion.
What ends up in the Markdown
- The text of the page and its links.
- The images that are stored inside the MHTML file.
MD Factory does not download anything. If the file lacks an image the page used, the note is saved without it and marked Needs review.
The statuses are the same as for other formats: Completed, Needs review, and Failed. For tips on cleaning up a converted web page, see the HTML guide.
Check the result
Open the .mhtml file in Edge or Chrome next to the Markdown file. Compare the headings, the images, and the part of the text you care about. Delete what you do not need, such as menus or related links, and add the page's address and the date you saved it as the first line. That lets you find the original later and credit it when you quote it.
If you use the note with an AI assistant, our workflow for AI agents shows how to keep sources attached to answers.
Pages you saved while signed in
A saved page contains what your browser showed, which can include your name, orders, or messages. The Markdown copy contains it as well. Check the note before you share it, put it in a synced folder, or give it to an AI service.
Convert only pages you saved yourself or got from someone you trust.
