Use a local converter to turn documents into Markdown without sending them to an online conversion service. MD Factory does the conversion on your Windows PC and saves the result in a folder you choose.

That is useful for private notes, a client document, or an archive you want to search locally. The next step is to make sure your chosen folder is local too.

Convert with a local app

Use MD Factory for PDFs, Word documents (DOCX), spreadsheets, presentations, saved web pages, emails, and DRM-free ebooks. It also recognizes text in scanned PDFs with local OCR. You do not need Microsoft Office or an AI account.

  1. Open MD Factory and add the documents you want to convert.
  2. Choose an output folder on your PC.
  3. Click Convert.
  4. Open the output folder and review the Markdown.

After conversion, open the result and check the passages you need. Complex tables and unclear scans may need corrections. Keep the original document so you can compare it with the Markdown.

Each document gets its own Markdown file. Images are saved in a folder next to the Markdown file. Move both together. Your original files stay unchanged.

The app does not send your documents, filenames, extracted text, or images to GagarinSoft or an AI service. The MD Factory privacy policy explains local processing and Microsoft Store services.

Start with the files you need. When you add a folder, MD Factory includes supported files from its subfolders, so check that it contains only the documents you want to convert.

Choose a folder that does not sync

A folder visible in File Explorer can still be connected to cloud storage. OneDrive can back up standard folders such as Documents and Desktop. Files saved there can sync even though the conversion itself happened on your PC.

Before converting private material, check where your output folder is stored. For OneDrive, open its settings and look under Sync and backup, then Manage backup. Microsoft's folder backup guide explains where to check.

Choose a folder outside the locations backed up by OneDrive or another sync service if you want the result to stay local. Check your source folder too if you also need the original documents to stay off cloud storage.

Decide what to share afterward

The Markdown contains text from your source documents. A different file extension does not remove private information. Treat the converted files and images with the same care as the originals.

You can keep the result in a local notes folder and read it with a text editor. If you later attach it to an online chat or copy text into a cloud service, you are sharing that content with that service.

For work documents, use the tools and storage locations your organization allows. Converting locally does not change your company's rules about uploads.

If you are preparing files for an AI agent, our document preparation guide covers organizing the folder. Check how your chosen AI tool handles those files before giving it private material.

Does conversion need the internet?

No. Conversion works offline without uploading your files.

Microsoft Store handles installation, purchases, licensing, and updates. Those operations can require a connection. This is separate from converting a document.
