Typeahead adds local phrase suggestions while you write in WhatsApp on Windows. Type the beginning of a message and accept a useful continuation with the configured key. The suggestion fills the message box; you still review and send the message.

The product lists WhatsApp among its supported applications. Start with a harmless draft and check your installed version rather than assuming that every desktop, web or managed build behaves identically.

Choose between word suggestions and phrase completion

Windows includes text suggestions for a physical keyboard. Microsoft's setup guide shows where to enable them. If those suggestions meet your needs, use them first.

Typeahead offers a different workflow: a local model proposes the next few words near the caret across supported Windows apps. It also has snippets and dictionary completion. This guide focuses on drafting a chat message; the Windows suggestions comparison covers the broader choice.

Set up and test an unsent message

  1. Install Typeahead from its Microsoft Store listing.
  2. Choose and download a local model suitable for your PC if you want AI phrase suggestions. Snippets and dictionary completion can work without the model.
  3. Confirm that Typeahead is enabled for WhatsApp.
  4. Open a conversation where an accidental test message would not expose private information.
  5. Type a neutral draft such as Thanks for the update. I will check and wait for a suggestion.
  6. Accept it only if it says what you intend. Review the complete draft before sending.

Use a modest model first if you are unsure about your computer. The local model requirements guide explains the trade-off between size and responsiveness. A model download is a setup step; local inference does not mean no download is ever needed.

Check the accept key before normal use

The default accept key is Tab, and the product lets you change it. In chat editors, Tab can also move focus. Test the key while a visible suggestion is present and check what happens when no suggestion is present.

Do not treat Enter as an accept key unless you have deliberately configured and tested that behaviour. Enter may send a message in a chat. Keep accepting a suggestion and submitting a message as separate actions until the interaction is predictable.

Keep names, dates and commitments in your hands

A plausible continuation is not confirmation of a fact. If a suggestion finishes your message with a deadline, amount or promise, check it against what you actually agreed. Type the intended detail yourself when precision matters.

For an exact recurring phrase, a saved snippet is more predictable than asking a model to guess it. For a new reply, ignore an unsuitable suggestion and keep typing. Typeahead's documented behaviour inserts a suggestion only when you accept it.

Understand what stays local

The Typeahead privacy policy describes local processing of typed text. WhatsApp still processes and delivers the message you send through its own service. A local writing assistant changes where suggestions are generated; it does not change the messaging service's data handling.

If suggestions disappear

Check whether Typeahead is paused or disabled for the app, whether the model has loaded, and whether suggestions work in Notepad. Re-test after an application update. If it works in Notepad but not your chat editor, use the autocomplete troubleshooting guide rather than changing unrelated Windows settings.

The useful test is a reply you would normally write. If suggestions repeatedly distract you or require more correction than typing, switch the feature off for that app and keep exact snippets for the text you repeat.

Frequently asked questions

Does accepting a suggestion send a WhatsApp message?
The intended Typeahead action inserts the suggestion. Review your accept-key configuration and the chat editor, then send the message separately.
Does Typeahead read the whole WhatsApp conversation?
Use it as a typing aid. Do not rely on it to retrieve the entire chat history or know commitments from earlier messages.
