How it works
Pick a window. It stays on top.
Three steps, and none of them needs a settings page.
Pick a window.
Press
Ctrl+Alt+Por click Pick window, then click the window you want. If you prefer the keyboard, choose it from a list instead. It stays above the others.
The window keeps its size, position and focus. Switch to any other app and the pinned window stays visible.
Let it go when you are done.
Unpin one window, or press
Ctrl+Alt+Shift+Rto restore everything. The tray menu has the same commands.
What you can do
Four things, done carefully.
The aim is a small tool you can trust, not a window manager.
- Pin any windowKeep a document, chat, terminal or monitoring window above the rest, one click or one shortcut away.
- Set the transparencyFrom 100% down to 30%, with presets for 75% and 50% and a reset button. Read the page underneath while the window stays put.
- Click through itAn optional advanced mode that lets the mouse pass through the window to whatever is behind it. It is off by default and explained the first time you turn it on.
- Shortcuts you can changePick a window, pin or unpin the active one, and restore everything. All three can be remapped, and the app tells you when a shortcut is already taken.
Easy to undo
Nothing gets stuck.
Pin Windows only changes windows you chose, and only what it needs to. Restore all is one click in the tray or one shortcut away, even when a window ignores the mouse.
- Back to how it wasA window that was already on top stays on top after you restore it.
- Safe on exitQuitting restores every window the app changed.
- Crash recoveryIf the app is closed unexpectedly, the next start undoes the changes for windows that are still the same ones. Nothing is restored after a restart of the PC.
- No administrator rightsIt runs as a normal user and never raises its own privileges.
Private by design
No account.
No telemetry.
Pin Windows works entirely on your PC. It collects no data and sends nothing anywhere. It stores only your preferences, such as language, theme and shortcuts, in a file on your PC.
It does not read what is inside your windows and does not take screenshots.
Good to know
Where it works, and where it does not.
Windows has rules no utility can bend, so Pin Windows does not promise more than it can do.
A pinned window stays above ordinary windows, but not necessarily above other windows that are also set to stay on top, such as some remote desktop and virtual machine windows. Full-screen games and video that take over the screen are not supported. Windows of apps running as administrator may be out of reach for an app running as a normal user. Transparency and click-through depend on the app that owns the window, and a few apps do not allow them. When something is not possible, Pin Windows tells you instead of failing quietly.

- Follows your Windows setting, or choose one yourself.
- Keyboard and screen readers
- Everything can be done without a mouse, and controls have accessible names.
FAQ
A few things to know.
Does it change my windows permanently?
No. Changes last until you restore the window or quit the app. Pinning is not saved across restarts and nothing is re-pinned automatically.
Will pinning change the window's size or steal focus?
No. Pinning changes only whether the window stays on top. It does not move, resize or activate the window.
What if click-through leaves me unable to reach the window?
That is what Restore all is for. Use Ctrl+Alt+Shift+R or the tray menu. Both belong to Pin Windows, not to the window you changed, so they keep working.
How is this different from PowerToys Always On Top?
PowerToys Always On Top pins the active window with one shortcut. Pin Windows adds a picker, per-window transparency, optional click-through and a restore-everything command. If you only need the pin, PowerToys is a fine choice. Our guide compares the options.
Does it work with windows of every app?
No. Some windows, such as those of apps running as administrator, cannot be controlled from a normal app, and a few apps do not allow transparency or click-through.
Does it use the internet?
No. It has no accounts, no telemetry and no ads. The Microsoft Store handles the purchase and the trial.
What does it cost?
A one-time purchase of $2.99 in the US, with a 7-day free trial that includes every feature. There is no subscription. Your local price appears in Microsoft Store.
