Word prediction offers the word or phrase you are most likely typing next, so you choose it instead of spelling it out. It has been a category of assistive technology for decades, used mostly by people for whom producing text is the expensive part of writing — because spelling is effortful, because recall is unreliable, or because every keystroke costs something physically.

What it changes

It changes two aspects of typing.

  • Fewer keystrokes for the same sentence. A word accepted from a list is one or two keys instead of eight. For someone typing with one hand, a head pointer or a switch, that ratio is the whole point.
  • The spelling is offered rather than corrected afterwards. Prediction provides the correct form while the writer is still choosing the word. A spell checker instead reports an error after the word has been typed. For a writer who avoids words they cannot spell, prediction can affect which words they use as well as how quickly they type.

What the evidence does and does not support

Research on word prediction consists mostly of small studies involving specific populations and software. Reported effects vary: some studies find gains in spelling accuracy and the amount written, while others find that writing becomes slower because scanning a list requires attention.

What that means practically: word prediction helps some people a great deal and others not at all, and which group you are in is not predictable from a description. It is worth trying, on your own writing, for long enough to get past the novelty. If the writing difficulty is significant, an assessment by an assistive technology specialist is how people get matched to the right tool — that is a job for a professional and not for an article.

The purpose-built tools

Software written specifically as assistive technology — Co:Writer, WordQ, ClaroRead, Ghotit and others — does things a general-purpose typing aid does not. Between them: tolerance for phonetic spelling, so a word spelled the way it sounds still finds its target; speech feedback that reads suggestions and completed sentences aloud; subject-specific word lists; and the documentation and licensing that education and workplace funding schemes expect.

If any of those matter, that is the category to shop in, and the vendors’ current feature lists are the place to check what each one does today. A general tool is not a substitute for software chosen through an assessment.

What Windows already gives you

Before buying anything, two settings are worth knowing about, because for lighter needs they may be enough.

  • Voice typing. Win + H dictates into whatever field has focus. For some people this replaces the question entirely, and it costs nothing to try.

If typing hurts

Pain in the hands, wrists or forearms while typing is a medical matter and belongs with a clinician, not with a software choice. Reducing keystrokes reduces keystrokes; it is not treatment and no software here should be read as such.
