Illustrated desk with a laptop, a notebook of handwritten lists and coloured index cards

Here are 50 text expander snippet ideas in nine groups: personal details, email openers and closers, scheduling, support replies, dates, symbols, links, Markdown and meetings. Each one has a shortcut and the text it inserts. Copy the ones you need, or import all 50 into Text Replacements for Windows from the free CSV and fill in the bracketed fields.

The list leaves out the basics covered in the starter library of 20 typing shortcuts, such as your email address, phone number and signature. If you have no snippets yet, start there. Related snippets share a prefix, such as ;cal- for scheduling, so you can guess a shortcut from its group.

Download the 50 snippets as a CSV

Download all 50 snippet ideas (CSV). Every row imports disabled, so nothing expands until you have edited an entry and turned it on.

  1. Export your current library as a backup.
  2. Import the CSV into Text Replacements for Windows. Shortcuts you already have are skipped and keep their text.
  3. Open an entry you want, replace every value in square brackets and tick Enabled.
  4. In an unsent draft, type the shortcut and press Space.
  5. Delete the entries you will not use.

Square brackets are ordinary text: the app does not ask you to fill them in when a snippet expands. Several entries span more than one line. Test those in a draft before using them in a chat window, where a line break can send the message.

Personal details

Details you type into forms and messages several times a week. Fill them in once and check them carefully, because a typo here repeats in every message.

Email openers and closers

An opener gets past the first line quickly. A closer states the next step or signs off. Two of the closers span several lines.

Dates and times that fill in themselves

A replacement can contain {date}, {time} or {datetime}. The app swaps in the current value when the snippet expands, so one shortcut gives today’s date every day. To choose a format, add it after a colon, as in {date:yyyy-MM-dd}. The guide to inserting today’s date covers the basics. The examples below show the output on Sunday, 11 October 2026 at 14:05.

ShortcutReplacementExample output
;d-time{time:HH:mm}14:05
;d-long{date:dddd, d MMMM yyyy}Sunday, 11 October 2026
;d-month{date:MMMM yyyy}October 2026
;d-file{date:yyyyMMdd}20261011
;d-noteUpdated {date:yyyy-MM-dd} by [your initials]:Updated 2026-10-11 by [your initials]:
CodeMeansExample
yyyyYear2026
MMMonth number, two digits10
MMMMMonth nameOctober
dDay without a leading zero11 (1 on the 1st)
ddDay, two digits11 (01 on the 1st)
ddddDay of the weekSunday
HHHour, 24-hour clock14
mmMinutes05

Capital MM is the month and lowercase mm is minutes, so {date:yyyy-mm-dd} puts the minutes where the month should be. Keep words outside the braces, because letters such as d, h and y inside them are read as codes. Day and month names follow your Windows regional format.

Symbols

Characters that are missing from most keyboards. For accents and more symbols, see typing accents and symbols on Windows 11. Emoji need no snippet: type a shortcode such as :fire:.

What never goes in a snippet

Do not store passwords, card numbers, bank details or identity numbers, such as passport or national ID numbers, in any snippet. Snippets are saved as plain text on your PC and are included in every export file you create, including the ones you send to colleagues.

Text Replacements does not expand shortcuts in password fields, so a password snippet would not work where you need it. Keep passwords in a password manager.

Keep the ones you use

You do not need all 50. Keep the ten you would have typed this week and delete the rest. When you notice yourself typing the same text for the third time, add it then. The shortcut naming guide explains how to choose shortcuts you will not trigger by accident.

Frequently asked questions

Will importing the pack replace my existing snippets?
No. Shortcuts you already have are skipped and keep their text. Only shortcuts you do not have yet are added.
Why are the snippets disabled after import?
The file sets every entry to disabled so you can replace the placeholders before anything expands. Turn each snippet on after you have edited it.
Can a snippet ask me for a name when it expands?
No. Text in square brackets is inserted exactly as written, and you replace it yourself. Only dates and times fill in automatically, through the {date}, {time} and {datetime} macros.
Do date snippets show today’s date every day?
Yes. The macro takes the current date and time each time the snippet expands. The inserted text then stays as it is.

Import the ideas you need and type each one with a short shortcut in any Windows app.
