Nano Summarizer can summarize a PDF in Chrome when the extension can extract its text and the device supports Chrome's built-in AI. The extension processes that extracted text locally, without a cloud AI fallback. Scanned pages and inaccessible PDF viewers may not work.

Start with a non-confidential report. Confirm that the extraction and local model work before relying on this workflow for a document governed by your organisation's data rules.

Check that the PDF contains usable text

Try selecting a sentence and copying it into a blank local document. If the result is empty, scrambled or contains only page furniture, the extension may not have enough usable content. A scanned image can look readable to you while providing no text for a summarizer.

The text summarizer guide describes supported source types. This workflow does not add OCR. For an image-only file, obtain a searchable text version through an approved process before summarizing it.

Open the file and invoke the extension

  1. Install Nano Summarizer and open the PDF in Chrome.
  2. If the file is local, open Chrome's extension management page, choose Nano Summarizer's Details, and enable Allow access to file URLs only if you want to grant that permission.
  3. Return to the PDF tab and invoke Nano Summarizer.
  4. Allow the first-run local AI setup to finish if Chrome requests it.
  5. Read the summary alongside the document. Check that the answer refers to the intended file.

Chrome explains file and site permissions in its extension management documentation. A work-managed browser may restrict those controls. Ask your administrator about an approved option rather than bypassing the policy.

A selectable PDF can still be inaccessible

Text selection is a useful first check, not a promise that Chrome exposes the text to the extension. A browser PDF viewer or embedded viewer may keep the document content outside the extraction path. If Nano Summarizer reports unavailable text, permission alone may not solve it.

Try an approved local text or Markdown version of the report instead. Keep it local if avoiding upload is the purpose of the task. Do not move a confidential file to a public hosting service merely to make the PDF URL accessible.

Check browser AI support separately

Google's Summarizer API documentation lists device, storage and initial model-download requirements. The browser model needs an initial download; later local inference does not require sending the document text to a cloud model. Check the current requirements for your device rather than assuming every Chrome installation has the feature.

If the model is unavailable, Nano Summarizer has no cloud fallback. Repeatedly refreshing the PDF will not repair unsupported hardware or a blocked model download.

Ask questions whose answers you can verify

  • What main findings does the report state?
  • What limitations does the author mention?
  • Which assumptions does the recommendation depend on?
  • What information is missing from the extracted text?

Then find those points in the PDF. Treat generated quotations, section references and numbers as things to check. A summary can omit a qualifier, mix table entries or infer a conclusion that the author did not make. For an important decision, read the relevant original section.

Keep the privacy boundary clear

The extension privacy policy describes transient processing without storing extracted page text or sending it to GagarinSoft. A PDF opened from a website still has that website's normal network activity. Other extensions and browser features have their own permissions.

For a local file, the useful promise is narrower: Nano Summarizer does not upload its extracted text for cloud inference. Follow the document owner's rules, and turn off local-file access when you no longer want the extension to have it.

Frequently asked questions

Can it summarize scanned PDFs?
It needs extractable text. This workflow does not perform OCR on an image-only scan.
Does selectable text guarantee extraction will work?
No. The viewer must expose usable text to the extension. If it does not, use an approved text version and check the result.
Why is an internet connection needed on first use?
Chrome may need to download its local model. That setup download is separate from processing the PDF text locally.
