If Beeftext still works for you, there is no need to replace it. Its developer has put it in maintenance mode: no new features, but fixes when a Windows update breaks it. The latest release on GitHub is v16.0, published on 31 December 2022. Look for an alternative if Beeftext has already stopped working on your PC, or if you need something it will no longer get.

Other guides on this site cover leaving AutoHotkey and leaving aText. This one is only about Beeftext: what maintenance mode means for it, what it does better than most expanders, and how to move your combos out.

What maintenance mode means for Beeftext

The developer, Xavier Michelon, set out the terms on the project wiki:

  • the software is no longer actively developed;
  • fixes come when Windows updates break its behaviour;
  • no new features and no new translations.

His reasons: the most requested features, sync and collaboration, would take too much time, and he now works almost entirely on macOS. He also writes that Beeftext “is not dead” and can still be used safely.

The GitHub page shows what that looks like in practice. On 12 October 2026 the repository listed v16.0 from December 2022 as the latest release. The README says the project is not looking for contributors and that all pull requests will be rejected. The code is under the MIT licence, so anyone may fork it, but fixes to the official build come only from the developer.

What Beeftext does better than most expanders

Before you switch, check whether you use the features that make Beeftext unusual. A simple expander will not replace them.

FeatureWhat it does
VariablesInsert the clipboard, ask for input, place the cursor, run PowerShell, press keys, add delays, change case and nest one combo inside another
Date arithmetic#{dateTime:+1d:} inserts tomorrow’s date; shifts work in years, months, weeks, days, hours, minutes and seconds
Combo pickerCtrl+Alt+Shift+Enter opens a search box for combos whose keyword you have forgotten
Loose matchingA combo can fire in the middle of a word, for symbols such as arrows
Portable editionRuns from a ZIP folder, for example from a USB stick, without installing
Price and licenceFree and open source

If several rows of that table are part of your day, keep Beeftext as long as it works. Text Replacements does not list any of them.

Beeftext’s own safety page explains the installer warning. The installer is not signed with an EV certificate, so SmartScreen warns about it. Some antivirus products also flag it, because watching keystrokes is what keyloggers do too. If you install it, download it only from beeftext.org or the GitHub releases page.

Two rows of the table affect everyday typing.

When the shortcut fires

Beeftext checks the characters you have typed after every key and replaces the keyword the moment it matches, as its matching documentation explains. Text Replacements waits for Space, Tab or Enter. Keywords chosen for Beeftext, such as xxsig, still work after the move, but you finish each one with a space or Enter.

How the text gets in

The Beeftext wiki says it works in “any application that supports copy/paste”, and its troubleshooting page traces most failures to apps that block the clipboard or do not accept Ctrl+V. Text Replacements types the replacement instead, so those apps behave differently with it. Test your own apps during the trial.

Move your combos from Beeftext

Beeftext exports two formats. Its JSON file is specific to Beeftext. The CSV file follows the format TextExpander uses: one combo per line with keyword, snippet and name, no header row, comma-separated. Use the CSV.

  1. In Beeftext, select all combos, choose Export and give the file a .csv extension. Beeftext picks the format from the extension; any other extension produces JSON.
  2. Open the file in Notepad. Add a first line that reads shortcut, replacement. Delete the third value on each line, the combo name, together with the comma before it.
  3. Save the file as UTF-8. If you edit it in Excel, check the result in Notepad: Excel can save with semicolons, depending on your region settings, and the import expects commas.
  4. Import three or four lines first. Check that the shortcuts and the text look right, including accented letters and line breaks, then import the rest.
  5. Quit Beeftext before testing. If both apps run, the same keyword can be replaced twice.

Date variables need rewriting by hand. Replace #{date} with {date}, #{time} with {time} and #{dateTime} with {datetime}. A custom format such as #{dateTime:yyyy-MM-dd} becomes {date:yyyy-MM-dd}; type each converted shortcut once to check the result. The guide to inserting today’s date lists the formats.

The other Beeftext variables have no equivalent, among them clipboard, input, cursor, PowerShell, key presses, delays and nested combos. Keep those combos in Beeftext or rewrite them as fixed text. The guide to moving a snippet library covers backups and moving the library between computers.

Which one to keep

Keep Beeftext if it works on your PC, costs you nothing to keep and you rely on its variables, the picker or the portable edition. Maintenance mode does not stop it working.

Switch if a Windows update has broken it on your PC, if your IT department will not approve an unsigned installer, or if you need expansion that stays out of password fields and the clipboard without a list to maintain. In every case, try the replacement with your own apps before you uninstall Beeftext.

Frequently asked questions

Is Beeftext still safe to use?
Its developer says it can still be used safely and that he will fix it when Windows updates break it. The latest release is v16.0 from December 2022. Download it only from beeftext.org or its GitHub releases page.
Can Text Replacements import my Beeftext JSON file?
Use CSV instead. Beeftext describes its JSON export as a Beeftext-specific format. Export to CSV, add a header line with shortcut and replacement, and import that file.
Will my Beeftext variables still work?
Only the date and time ones, after you rewrite them, for example #{date} as {date}. Clipboard, input, cursor, PowerShell, key, delay and nested-combo variables have no equivalent in Text Replacements.
Do I need to change my Beeftext keywords?
Usually not. Beeftext replaces a keyword as soon as you type it; Text Replacements waits for Space, Tab or Enter. The same keywords work, but you end each one with one of those keys.

Try your exported combos in Text Replacements during the free trial before you uninstall Beeftext.
